As we head into summer break, we want to say “Thank you” to our community for approving the 2018 bond! Because of our community’s support, Salem-Keizer Public Schools will be able to make improvements, expansions and/or renovations all across the district. Improvements planned include additional space to serve our community’s growing enrollment as well as expanded career-technical (vocational) spaces, more space for science education, safety and security improvements and seismic safety upgrades.

Five schools are scheduled to begin construction in 2019 – Gubser Elementary School, Judson Middle School, Waldo Middle School, McNary High School and North Salem High School. All work approved under the bond is planned to be finished in about five years. At many schools, construction is likely to take place during the school year. Schools, architects and the district’s bond program management team will work together to minimize disruption of the educational environment caused by construction. However, it’s important for parents, students and staff to be aware that school operations will be different during construction. Our commitment to student safety and success will be unchanged during construction.

We would once again like to extend our appreciation to the Salem-Keizer community for supporting students and schools by approving the 2018 bond!

2018 Proposed Bond On May 15 Ballot

The School Board has finished its work on a bond package and has referred it to the May 15 ballot for the community to consider.

Before finalizing the bond, the Board heard feedback through a community survey, through the Community Facilities Task Force and through listening sessions with staff and community members held in every high school neighborhood. The Board twice asked staff to revise the bond package to make sure it aligned with the feedback they received and still addressed the needs of facilities.

Highlights of the proposed bond include:

· Increasing safety and security, including seismic safety of schools

· Adding/expanding space to relieve crowding and prepare for future enrollment, including general education classrooms and space for music programs

· Adding/expanding space for career-technical (vocational) education at all six traditional high schools as well as Roberts High School

· Adding/renovating science labs at middle and high schools

The proposed bond package totals $619.7 million and if passed by voters in May, is estimated to increase the current property tax levy rate by $1.24 per $1,000 of assessed value. If the bond does not pass, the additional tax would not be levied and the listed projects would not be completed. The Community Facilities Task Force reviewed all funding methods available to the district and recommended the School Board place a general obligation bond on the ballot for voters to consider. The district would receive an $8 million grant from the state if the bond passes.

Make a difference! Cast your vote!

Please remember to register to vote or update your voter registration if you have moved or changed political parties so you’re ready to fill out and return your ballot when it arrives in the mail.

To register to vote in Oregon, you must be a U.S. citizen, an Oregon resident, and at least 17 years old. The deadline to register to vote in the upcoming May 15 election is April 24.

Registered voters receive a ballot in the mail about two weeks before an election.

There are three ways to register to vote in Oregon:

1. Have your Oregon driver’s license or state ID card handy and register online

2. Pick up a voter registration form at the post office or library (or download online) and return it in the mail

3. Go to the county elections office to fill out a form

If you have moved, changed your name or mailing address, or want to change political parties, you can update your voter registration through the same methods.

Salem-Keizer Public Schools Joins SafeOregon Confidential Tip Line

Salem-Keizer Public Schools (SKPS) has officially joined SafeOregon, a confidential tip line that gives our kids, parents, schools and communities a confidential way to report safety threats or potential acts of violence.

Salem-Keizer Public Schools has a sophisticated and proactive intervention system in place for timely interventions. These include the SKPS Office of Behavioral Learning, the Office of Safety and Risk Management, and our Threat Response System that offers step-by-step protocols on preventing and controlling potentially dangerous situations.

The SafeOregon tip line adds an additional resource to ensure students and staff have a confidential avenue for reporting and bolsters SKPS’ relationship with law enforcement. This program is run and managed by the Oregon State Police and has proven to prevent acts of violence.

“Since the SafeOregon began its statewide program, we’ve seen it grow as a resource for the communities we serve,” said John Van Dreal, SKPS Director of Safety and Risk Management Services. “We know that what keeps our children safe is an open line of communication, and SafeOregon provides that communication in a confidential way.”

All tips reported by members of the Salem-Keizer community– including parents, students and employees – in regard to school and student safety will be closely investigated by the Oregon State Police and SKPS. The safety of our students, staff and volunteers is without question, our highest priority.

We encourage all parents to download the SafeOregon App on their phones, and their child’s phone as well. Individuals may also report a tip by calling or sending a text to 844-472-3367 anytime. Tips also can be emailed to tip@safeoregon.com. For more information, go to www.safeoregon.com.

Las Escuelas Públicas de Salem-Keizer participarán en el programa confidencial SafeOregon

Oficialmente las Escuelas Públicas de Salem-Keizer (SKPS, por sus siglas en inglés) participarán en SafeOregon, una línea directa, informativa y confidencial que ofrece a los estudiantes, padres, escuelas y comunidades un medio confidencial para presentar denuncias de amenazas a la seguridad o posibles actos de violencia.

Las Escuelas Públicas de Salem-Keizer tienen establecido un sistema de intervención complejo y diligente para intervenciones oportunas. En este sistema se incluyen los diferentes departamentos de SKPS: el Departamento de Aprendizaje Conductual, el Departamento para la Gestión de la Seguridad y Prevención de Riesgos y nuestro Sistema de Respuesta a Amenazas, el cual contiene un método paulatino y detallado para prevenir y controlar situaciones potencialmente peligrosas.

La línea informativa SafeOregon es un recurso adicional que garantiza a los estudiantes y al personal escolar un medio confidencial para hacer denuncias y fortalece la relación de SKPS con las agencias policiales. Este programa lo dirige y lo gestiona la Policía Estatal de Oregon y ha demostrado prevenir actos de violencia.

“Desde que SafeOregon inició su programa a nivel estatal, hemos visto que es un recurso que se ha expandido en las comunidades a las que servimos”, dijo John Van Dreal, Director del departamento para la gestión de la seguridad y prevención de riesgos de SKPS. “Sabemos que lo que mantiene a nuestros niños seguros es una línea abierta de comunicación y SafeOregon ofrece esa comunicación de una forma confidencial”.
